One huge custom of the emo culture is the music. In this culture music is a huge staple, as it is in many other cultures. The music style of this particular culture originated out of hardcore/ punk rock. Some bands that are within this genre and that one could find an emo individual listening to include: A Day To Remember, Fall Out Boy, Escape The Fate, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Pierce The Veil and many more. The music of the emo culture comes in many genres and not just one, some are known to listen to certain rap or even country artists, not all in the emo culture listen to the exact same genre!
Another huge custom of the emo culture is the way that they dress and wear their hair. Emo fashion is characterized by tight/ skinny jeans, tight t-shirts (usually some sort of a band or graphic t-shirt), black or brightly dyed hair color, straightened and cut so that there is fringe hanging down covering one or both eyes. This is not to be confused with the goth culture that of whom have a completely different way of dressing although it is often confused with emo.
Books and poems are another way that people in the emo subculture like to express themselves. A book that was prominently read by those in the subculture was The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. They are also very fond of poetry because of the emotional aspects of it, it is also a good way to release feelings onto paper. Basically writing that those of the culture would be drawn to read are those that have intense emotion within it seeing as that is primarily what the culture is based off of.
Most of the reason why this culture is rejected and looked down upon by others is simply for one very false assumption. Most assume that those of the emo subculture are all self destructive and self abusive. This is the biggest reason why so many governments in other countries and parents do not approve of this subculture, self harm is falsely associated with it. Food for thought: not everyone who is emo self harms and not everyone who self harms is emo.
